Last week we introduced you to the idea of bringing the kids to Tahiti and named a few of our favorite family-friendly resorts. Considering a trip? If you’re worried there won’t be enough for the kids to do, believe us, there are many ways to keep your children entertained in Tahiti. Even beyond that, there are numerous educational opportunities available for kids and adults alike.
Kid-Approved Activities
There is so much to do in Tahiti for any and all age groups. Water activities include:
- Glass Bottom Boat. This is a great way to enjoy the water without getting wet. If you want the benefits of taking the kids snorkeling without the worry of swimming, it’s the perfect kid-friendly activity.
- Swimming. Whether at the beach, in the lagoon, at the resort swimming pool or in your own private plunge pool, there are endless opportunities to enjoy playtime in the water.
- Snorkeling. You can rent snorkeling gear from your hotel and often find local beaches where the water is calm and shallow. If you’re staying in an overwater bungalow (be sure to read our advice in Part I about overwater bungalows with young children), simply jump off your deck and you’ll encounter plenty of fish swimming in the lagoon.
- Swim with Dolphins & Sea Turtles. At the InterContinental Moorea Resort & Spa, kids can swim with dolphins at The Moorea Dolphin Center. At Le Méridien Bora Bora, they can swim with sea turtles in the resort’s enclosed lagoon thanks to the popular Turtle Sanctuary.
- Shark & Ray Feeding. Older kids will get a thrill out of this popular water activity. You’ll find yourself completely surrounded by stingrays and friendly blacktip reef sharks while your guide feeds them right before your eyes. Don’t worry, they are way less interested in you and much more interested in the actual food.
Land activities include:
- Circle Island & Guided Tours. Some islands offer wonderful tours led by knowledgeable guides. You’ll see various points of interest around the island including museums (mostly in Tahiti) and even hike to archeological sites. It’s a great chance for the whole family to learn about history, art, geology and wildlife.
- Hiking or Bike Riding. Take your young explorers on your own self-guided adventure through lush hillsides and scenic landscapes. You can go hiking, take a simple stroll along the beach, or rent bikes from the resort.
- Horseback Riding. Tahiti and Huahine have amazing riding trails and great equestrian companies. For instance, we highly recommend Le Petite Ferme on Huahine.
- 4X4 Jeep Safari. Take the kids for a ride and enjoy a half-day or full-day excursion into the lush interior of some of the islands.
- Polynesian Shows. Many of the resorts offer regular evening performances of music and dance, sometimes featuring local children.
- Shopping & Dining. Opportunities can vary depending on where you’re staying. On the island of Tahiti, you can enjoy nightly outings to Vai’ete Square and eat dinner at the famous food trucks (Les Roulottes).
Educational Experiences
Just as there is so much to do in Tahiti, there is also so much to learn. Kids will not only be exposed to history and culture, but they can also learn about protecting the environment.
A few resorts in Tahiti are EarthCheck Certified, meaning they are leaders in environmental sustainability. The InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa uses a system known as SWAC (Sea Water Air Conditioning) in which they draw seawater from the depths of the ocean to reuse for electricity. Kids can visit the resort’s small museum where they showcase the pipes used in the process. Pretty amazing!
The resorts also do whatever they can to protect marine life. The InterContinental Bora Bora and Four Seasons Bora Bora have their own marine biologists on staff; while the InterContinental Moorea and Le Méridien Bora Bora are home to sea turtle sanctuaries where they shelter and nurse turtles back to health. The staff at these resorts are always happy to spend time with guests and teach them about their efforts.
