The 2012 Billabong Pro Tahiti

Earlier this year, we introduced you to Tahiti’s famed surf spot, Teahupo’o, and spoke briefly about the Billabong Pro Tahiti. Well… the month of August is now upon us and the main event is scheduled to start on Thursday, August 16th!

The Billabong Pro Tahiti is the fifth event on the ASP World Tour (Association of Surfing Professionals), which has been crowning World Champions since 1976. Other stops on the tour include Brazil, Hawaii, Portugal and Australia. They just wrapped up the Billabong Pro at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa on July 24, 2012, and now the surfers are officially headed for Tahiti! Here’s an awesome teaser for the event:

If everything goes smoothly, the competition should start on time. Last year, however, the event was postponed due to a very heavy swell. Here’s a video called “Code Red” that we shared a few months ago from last year’s event, documenting this incredible, record-breaking surf.

Once it gets underway, you can watch the whole thing live thanks to Red Bull TV. Good luck to all the surfers participating in this year’s event!
